Mickey's Dangerous Chase from Now Production, Kemko, Capcom and Disney Interactive is a 2D Platformer with gameplay similarities to their NES Rescue Rangers game, which sees Mickey and Minnie chasing down perpetual d-bag, Pete, for some reason.
You get to pick whether to play as Mickey or Minnie Mouse, though there doesn’t seem to be any difference between the two.
Anyone who played Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers will be on instantly familiar ground, as you pick up and toss ‘blocks’ across the screen at enemies, most of which are just generic animals, and none of whom have any AI.
The weasels from ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ make an appearance as enemies on the first level. Which is nice.
It moves a bit slower than Rescue Rangers, and you can’t do as much since it’s only single player, but it ‘feels’ very similar, so imagine it must run on the same engine.
The game has 5 Stages, each consisting of 3 levels, most of which being standard platforming affairs.
Hidden in each level are 4 ‘round ball things’ which, if you find them all, give an extra life at the end. The screen doesn’t scroll back (left) very much, typical of a lot of older Platform games, so you can’t really explore very well for any you might have missed, they’re already gone. A missed opportunity maybe? as they could have made more of this collection element, but that sort of thing didn’t really become standard in these sorts of game until the likes of Donkey Kong Country.
The third level of every Stage mixes things up a bit with a vehicle or some such. A bit of variety never hurts I suppose.
Dangerous Chase is mostly a cakewalk, though does get more challenging on the last couple of Stages, with more complex and interesting level design, and is mostly better for it. The penultimate level with the constantly upward scrolling screen, combine with several ‘unavoidable death’ paths is classic bullshit however.
The increased difficulty does drag the game out long enough so that it doesn’t feel as short as a lot of GB games though, even if Infinite Continues ensure it isn’t too taxing.
Goofy is always waiting for you at the end of each level to helpfully inform you that you just missed Pete, but apparently doing nothing about it! Complete moron!
The graphics are basic but ‘clean’ enough, and the game controls well. Also there is a decent assortment of music, with some catchy loops.
Mickey's Dangerous Chase isn’t one of the best Capcom/Disney collaborations, made slightly more interesting due to its similarities with Rescue Rangers (the superior game) and appears to have involved a tiny bit more than the usual effort afforded to Game Boy games, i.e. ‘none’! but is still completely average and instantly forgettable overall.
Turns out Pete had stolen a box with a bird in it ...what a let down.
